The most important feature of this metal is that it has a light-permeable structure that allows it to harmonize with natural teeth. Zirconium, which is a solid metal, also gives high durability to the porcelain coated on it. It has aesthetic advantages over metal-based porcelains. Because the paint called opaquer, which is used to cover the grayness of the metal in porcelains with metal infrastructure, makes the porcelain look more opaque and matte, while causing the depth of the light to disappear.
In addition, in porcelain veneers using normal metal, sometimes the grayness of the metal appears over the gingiva near the gingiva. This situation does not occur in zirconium porcelains.
The preference of zirconium especially in porcelain veneers to be applied to the anterior region makes our patients more aesthetically pleasing. In terms of price, it is a little more expensive than porcelain with metal infrastructure.
How is zirconium porcelain made?
1-2 mm is cut from all surfaces of the teeth as in normal metal infrastructure porcelains. The measurement is taken and sent to the laboratory. If there is no problem after rehearsing the zirconium infrastructure once, the finished zirconium porcelains of the patient are adhered to the teeth on the second visit.
What are the advantages of zirconium?
It can be used on all teeth where porcelain teeth with metal infrastructure are used.
It is easier to emulate natural teeth because of its high light transmittance.
Compared to other aesthetic porcelains, it does not reflect the darkness of the dark and colored teeth underneath.
It does not cause any change in taste or smell. It does not color.
What are the disadvantages?
It is more costly than metal-based porcelain.
It is not preferred because of the possibility of breakage in long bridges to be made especially in the absence of a large number of teeth in the posterior regions.
Since zirconium is a tissue-friendly material, it is not allergenic. It can be used comfortably.
In recent years, zirconiums originating from China have been coming. Their compatibility, aesthetics, quality and lifespan are low. For this reason, prices may change. In addition, in this treatment, criteria such as the dentist's experience in this field, meticulousness, and the quality of sterilization materials in the treatment process are factors that affect the pricing. Going cheap can cost the patient more.
