The process of removing the dye that causes discoloration in the teeth with tooth whitening gels is called bleaching. The gels used provide whitening on the teeth by releasing oxygen and replacing them with the substances that cause coloration.
The most common but temporary side effect is sensitivity. 1 or 2 days of tooth sensitivity is normal. If the patient has tobacco habits such as smoking, it causes re-colouring after bleaching. Avoiding tooth-staining foods and drinks as much as possible ensures that the whiteness lasts for a long time.
Whitening should definitely be performed by dentists. The gels used are applied to the teeth with precision and care. The gels that are used, are very harmful for soft tissue.
Do not rely on videos promising teeth whitening with foods such as baking soda, lemon, vinegar, which we come across quite frequently on social media. These products have no benefit for teeth whitening and can cause irreversible damage and sensitivity to the teeth.
How to do it?
First, calculus (stones on the teeth) and plaque are removed. Lips and tongue are removed from the whitening area with the help of a retractor. A protective barrier is applied on the gums. Cotton swabs are placed and the teeth are dried. The whitening gel is left on for 15 to 20 minutes. This constitutes our first session. The gel is cleaned over a few teeth and shown to the patient with a mirror. Since everyone's aesthetic understanding is different from each other, the degree of whiteness is controlled in cooperation with the patient and the physician. When our patient wants another session, the gel is applied again and waited for 15 to 20 minutes. After our patient says OK, the gel is cleaned and the patient is told to rinse his/her mouth quickly. A white smile makes everyone happy.
